Verify assignment before comparing performance
First verify which district and schools serve the address for the intended school year. A mailing city, listing description, nearby school, or third-party map is not final proof of assignment. Districts control their boundaries, enrollment rules, and building assignments. Each can change.
Only after assignment is confirmed does performance data become address-relevant. MI School Data is Michigan’s official public education-data portal and supports comparisons at state, district, school, and other reporting levels.
Read beyond a single score
- Check the school year and publication date. Different measures update on different schedules.
- Read what the metric measures, which students are included, and whether small groups are suppressed for privacy.
- Use several measures, including enrollment, attendance, graduation, assessment, staffing, programs, and finances. Do not treat one composite rating as a complete judgment.
- Compare like with like and look at trends across years. A one-year change may reflect cohort size, reporting changes, or other context the headline number does not show.
- Ask the district directly about programs, transportation, enrollment, and building-specific questions that matter to the household.
Keep school data separate from property marketing
Penn | Ewing directs buyers to official maps and public data without ranking schools or neighborhoods. Buyers can compare the programs, logistics, and measures important to them.
Save the source, reporting year, and district confirmation with the property records in case a boundary, program, or data release changes before closing.
